Over the past 50 years a series of dams on the lower Snake River have caused the demise of wild Chinook salmon. The Southern Resident Orca rely on the salmon as their primary food source and are now threatened with extinction. This documentary exposes the propaganda and lies issued by the Army Corps of Engineers, Bonneville Power Administration and members of Congress who claim the dams are a vital part of the regional economy and power grid. The Snake and the Whale reveals the fight to preserve the environment against those who are indifferent to it.
Ocean Sun, L25 (pictured with the distinctive open saddle patch) is the oldest living member of the L Pod. She is the presumed mother of Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut (Toki) who was captured at approximately four years old and sold to the Miami Seaquarium in 1970. Toki died after 53 years in captivity. There are only 73 members left of the Southern Resident Orcas. Breaching the four lower snake river dams will provide her family with the food source needed to escape extinction.
